Language policy and tests



ÉTS language policy

Applicants for Ph.D. programs with an Applied Research profile or Master's programs with thesis who have not studied in French or English in Canada must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English by successfully completing an English-language test, unless one of the following conditions applies:

  • Having successfully completed all secondary education in English (Academic transcript and SSGD required).
  • Having successfully completed the ministry exit exam in language and literature in CEGEP.
  • Having successfully completed an institutional exam administered by a Canadian university, certifying the applicant’s mastery of English (official proof of test results required).
  • Having obtained a university diploma that requires at least three years of university-level studies exclusively in English (diploma and transcripts required).



TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication)

Only test results less than 24 months old are acceptable.

Between 405 and 600 Admission conditional upon retaking the test and obtaining a satisfactory score
Below 405 Admission refused



TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

The TOEFL test measures ability to use and understand English at the university level. It evaluates how well one combine listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks.

Only test results less than 24 months old are acceptable.
