Distinction between thesis and projects

All graduate programs, which include Master’s programs and specialized graduate degree programs, require students to complete a thesis or a project (there are three types of projects). The details of each type of program are explained below.

Professor acts as Research Director Introductory research activity:
  • Development and technology transfer that address complex engineering problems
  •  Work carried out at ÉTS laboratories, in conjunction with industry
  • Subsidized activity, depending on available bursaries

Work plan:
  • Literature search
  • Identification of a problem
  • Development of the methodology
  •  Theoretical development and experimentation
  • Writing of a thesis and oral presentation.
 
Application project
(15 credits)
 
 Master’s with project
(M.Eng.)

Specialized graduate degree program (DESS)
675 hours, covering
1 or 2 sessions
Professor acts as Research Director Mid-level research activity:
  • Innovation, development or technology transfer project
  • Work carried out at ÉTS laboratories, in conjunction with industry

Work plan:
  • Literature search
  • Identification of a problem
  • Development of the methodology
  • Development-execution of the project
  • Writing of a report
Project carried out within a company
(9 or 15 credits)
 
Master’s with project
(M.Eng.)

Specialized graduate degree program (DESS)
675 hours, covering
1 or 2 sessions
Professor acts as Research Director
  • Innovation, development or technology transfer project within the context of professional practice or a regular job
  • Corporate mandate, chosen by the student and approved by the Program Director
  • Work carried out at a company, in conjunction with ÉTS laboratories.

Work plan:
  • Identification of a problem
  • Development of the methodology
  • Development-execution of the project
  • Writing of a report
Technical project
(6 credits)
 
Master’s with project
(M.Eng.)

Specialized graduate degree program (DESS)
 270 hours covering
1 or 2 sessions
Professor acts as Research Director
  • Activity similar to that for an Application project or a Project carried out within a company, but on a smaller scale

  • Literature search
  • Identification of a problem
  • Development of the methodology
  • Development-execution of the project
  • Writing of a report
