TSCI is among the top causes of physical and psychosocial impairment due to its long and complicated recovery process

Every year in the United States, approximately 150,000 to 160,000 people fracture their spinal column and approximately 10,000 to 17,000 people sustain a spinal cord injury. Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal (HSCM) is a leading Level 1 trauma centre in Quebec specializing in spinal trauma and traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI). Between 80 and 100 patients with TSCI undergo surgery annually at the centre.

TSCI is among the top causes of physical and psychosocial impairment due to its long and complicated recovery process. In addition, it generates high cost for the healthcare system. That is why there is such a strong need to investigate traumatic vertebral and spinal cord injuries, improve our understanding of these complex injuries, and develop novel TSCI prevention and treatment devices.
