The work conducted by Chairholder Omar Chaallal and his colleagues is designed to:

  • Add to the body of knowledge on infrastructure strengthening and rehabilitation, including the compatibility between repair and existing materials and the durability of materials under various conditions.
  • Develop innovative materials and structural components using recent and promising technology (for example, nanotechnology and natural polymer fibres) to enhance performance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Transform fundamental knowledge into practical expertise in efforts to develop more effective concepts and materials as well as new applications.
  • Train construction engineers and high-level researchers in a setting that fosters the sharing of knowledge on structural strengthening materials.
